Falling off the World

I fell off the edge of the world yesterday
and you caught me
you sought me
through words I thought no-one
would ever read;

I am finding my self-worth
as I look for your words;
the only one who hears;
the one who stills my fears.

One Way Traffic

Would you meet me
if I told you
I would sell my rare
Coltrane records
for one minute
just to hold you?

The next flight to Miami
leaves these shores on the sixteenth
I’ve never kissed an American woman
or climbed a real palm tree.

My Mountain

Tell the mountains
they are lucky
to be gracefully trampled by you;

If I were I mountain
I would make a path
covered in love letters
that would lead to
the heart of me too.

Listen carefully

Enjoy it
while the moment lasts
for the muse
does not visit everyday;
I missed her whispering,
I was in the shower
contaminated with my pain.

Dry I came back to my desk
to an uncomfortable, empty chair;
I wrote instantly,
forgettable, regrettable words
that could not convey
my despair.

Geography Lovers

To trace the contours
of your breasts;
slow to kiss and then your neck
hands in chestnut hair swim;
the arch of your back
as you tempt me in.

To fall and rise
among the covers
not man and wife
but star-crossed lovers that
peak and climb
to such great heights
on many a moonless,
starless night.

Leave your shoes on

Take off your cloak
leave it outside my door;
you’re in my arms
care for the loss no more;

Let your hair down,
let your mind run free,
breathe within my words
and together; one we will be;

Leave your shoes on
for reasons personal to me;
unpack your life
let me in; let me see;

Burn the cloak
you brought with you
and wear this one I freely give;
burn all the bridges
that stopped you running to me;
my arms;
my soul;
my kiss.

I cannot promise my words
will never hurt you; and this
no man should ever guarantee;
but if you would chance
then we will together find
whatever will be
will be.

My Mathematical Distance

My golden badge
for coming second best
lies buried and I am stripped; teased
cut free from my lifeboat
I slow swim from what I once wanted
toward shores full of need;

Yet just before paradise touched
I am defeated, drowning not waving
I swim back to my two treasures smiling
and watch the fading lustre
of the horizon slowly begin
again;

I am happy in candid moments shared
but the sum of all my fears
is the distance between the lifeboat I have
and the island I want;
raised to the power of three.

An Ocean Apart

Will we ever stand toe-to toe
and forget what to say?

Will we ever spend ten thousand hours
in one expansive day?

More than words will fill you
as verse falls wanting from your
fresh bitten lips;

More than words will fill you
when finally I slow trace
the contours of your hips.

Dirty Thursday

You in my shirt leaves me
in a state of unrest;
you make the coffee
I make the bed;

You enter the bathroom
and use it like a tardis
you emerge like a butterfly
and I see how grey
my life is;

do not stray too close to me
do not step into my cage
but please drop by
and drop more of your clothes
not just on Thursdays.

My Wild Horses

My heart pulled apart
by two tethered horses
named love and lust;
it is no secret
with words penned
I need no seductive look;

You stole the planet
from under me
and I yearn to be breathless
for another reason;

not for the stairs I climb
on my own
or for the harshness of
the passing seasons.
